Sources say his move is a protest against the Palestinian Authority’s decision to resume coordination with Israel.

Hanan Ashrawi, one of the main members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), has resigned, a PLO source told Anadolu on Monday.

Ashrawi, a member of the PLO’s executive committee, tendered his resignation to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in his capacity as committee chairman, the source said, requesting anonymity.

Abbas has not yet approved or rejected the resignation, the source added, without disclosing details of what prompted the move.

Al Jazeera has made several calls to Ashrawi but has not received a response at the time of this report’s publication.

Ashrawi, 74, is the highest-ranking politician in the Palestinian Authority and has been a member of the PLO’s executive committee since 2009.

She was the spokesperson for the Palestinian delegation to the 1991 Madrid Conference and participated in negotiations with Israel.

Reports of his resignation first appeared on The New Arab News website, which cited sources saying his move was a protest against the PA’s decision last month to resume coordination with Israel.

The sources told Ashrawi news outlet “angry at the way the issue has been handled”.

Last May, the Palestinian Authority broke all covenants and agreements with Israel after the latter’s plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

However, he resumed his coordination activities with Israel in November, after saying that the United States had assured that Israel would respect existing agreements with the Palestinians.

The sources also said Ashrawi asked Abbas if she could leave her post for personal reasons, after contracting the coronavirus in October.
