Create homemade copy recipes, like pineapple whisk or Spring roll is one of my hobby. The latest addition to the range is the homemade Junior Mints. With just a few simple ingredients, they’re easy, tasty, and fun to put in your mouth.

Make junior mint at home

Making candy can be a tricky process! Sugars usually need to be heated to a certain temperature for a while. Unlike some types of homemade candy, you don’t have to worry about that with these dairy-free Junior Mints lookalikes.

It took some trial and error, but it turns out that coconut oil, a little honey, and a little peppermint extract or peppermint essential oil taste just as good otherwise. better than the real thing!

Point: Coconut oil should be sweet enough to mix easily with honey and mint. If it doesn’t, you may need to melt it, add the other ingredients, and then chill it before turning it into dumplings or patties.

Cool the mixture, then give it any shape and size you want. Kids love to help out with this part, which is why we ended up with a variety of interesting bumps instead of the traditional flat oval shape. I think it adds character and a personal touch!

Finally, cool the formed mints before dipping them in melted chocolate. One last thrill and it’s done!

Differences between homemade and store-bought junior mints

Store-bought Junior Mints are known for their soft, slightly melting center. An enzyme called invertase is used to achieve this. Invertase breaks down the sucrose in sugar into glucose and fructose and makes it soft and liquid.

Since I’ve been making homemade Junior Mints with coconut oil and honey, they are a bit firmer at room temperature. However, coconut oil melts at such a low temperature that the heat in your mouth will melt it on its own.

The other difference you’ll notice between homemade and store-bought is the difference in sheen. Store-bought Junior Mints are coated with pastry glaze, which is made from a resin excreted by beetles.

Sorry, but I don’t cover my beautiful chocolate-coated peppermint balls with beetle juice just to make them shiny! I’m not going to play perfectly with tempering chocolate either. Life is too short and they are delicious without any additional problems!

Some homemade candy recipes to try

I use coconut oil for the base of most of my homemade sweets. I used it to do:

I doubt these Junior Mints will have the chance to sit in the house for more than two days, but if you have more, try mixing them into a homemade ice cream or milkshake! Confession: my husband and I did this juvenile mint milkshake for St. Patrick’s Day one year. (For a healthier version, use my homemade mint ice cream made with avocados to do it!)
