This page is part of IGN’s Valheim Wiki Guide and details everything you need to know about backing up your save data to ensure your world is safe from any bugs or potential issues that could potentially corrupt or destroy. your world.
As intimidating as saving your worlds and characters may seem, you might be surprised to learn how easy it can be if you follow our simple instructions below.
How to back up your Valheim backup data
Before you start, it’s important to make sure your game is completely stopped as copying your data while the game is active can potentially damage your files when you move them.
If you are still fairly new to the world of PC video games, chances are some of your files / folders are still hidden. To make sure you can see them, just type “show hidden items” in the Windows search bar and open the system settings option. Here you will find an option to show your hidden files.
To save your Valheim save data, you must first navigate to the location of your game file. Typically, you can find your save data in the following location:
- C: Users Username AppData LocalLow IronGate Valheim
Otherwise, if your files are hidden, you can find them manually by searching % application data% in the Windows search bar. This will open your files in the AppData Roaming folder. From there, go back to the AppData folder and select LocalLow, followed by IronGate, then Valheim.
Once you’ve reached the Valheim folder, you’ll find several folders titled Characters, Screenshots, and Worlds. Now copy those folders and paste them to a safe location – whether it’s in a new folder on your desktop or even on another hard drive. These files will serve as a backup if you need to restore your data.
If your world is corrupt or you’re still looking to restore your world to an old backup, simply copy your backup files and paste them into your Valheim folder, replacing any data you no longer want.
Keep in mind that as you progress through the game, you’ll want to continually back up your data to make sure you always have a backup ready to go in case something goes wrong.
