Viking survival game Valheim is full of dangerous encounters, wandering skeletons and mosquitoes on falling trees. However, boss encounters like the Bonemass are certainly much more difficult and deadly than other dwellers in the standard biome. Bonemass is the third world boss in Valheim, after Eikthyrnir and Oldest boy. So how do you beat him?
Find the Bonemass
First of all, you need to know where the boss is! The Bonemass can be found in swamp biomes, so be on the lookout for runestunes in swamp areas and in the Sunken crypts. Your world will have multiple spawn locations for each boss, so if you are exploring multiple swamps or have multiple teams combing areas, you may find more than one spawn point for Bonemass. If you have the option to tackle the Bonemass in different locations, choose the one that involves the least amount of navigation and the fewest traverses of difficult biomes like the plains.
This next part is important for any boss except maybe Eikthyrnir, but make sure you build a portal and a rough dwelling somewhere safe near the boss. It’s entirely possible that you might die, and you’ll want a quick way back to your body to collect your loot and / or continue the fight. Believe me, you don’t want to build a boat every time you want to come back after a crash to get slaughtered by random spots or leeches on the way back to your body.
Summon of the Bonemass
You’re going to need some bones. Withered bones. Specifically, you will need ten Withered Bones each time you want to summon a Bonemass. These can be found in abundance in the Sunken crypts dotted around the swamps, so you should be able to collect plenty of them. Then you will need to go to the point on the map where you identified the Bonemass location. Look for a giant shiny green skull, it’s hard to miss. Clear absolutely everything else to make sure you have the least possible chance of being attacked by other enemies during the boss encounter. Bonemass spawns his own additional companion enemies, so you really don’t want just one other potential enemy to enter the fight.

Fight the Bonemass
Everything was easy until this part. You are going to want to take the best food possible you have in this battle because the Bonemass can deal incredible damage over time with poison and packs an incredibly powerful punch. The Bonemass also regularly summons Venom Drops and Annoying Skeletons during combat, and you’ll want to deal with them as soon as you can. Before starting this fight, you’ll definitely want to stock up on consumables, especially poison-free mead and healing potions. Without poison resistance, you’re going to be playing a risky and doomed game here, as his giant tidal wave of green goo will inevitably hit you at some point. Bring the best gear you have, hopefully improved iron and a good blunt weapon.
Using one of the area-of-effect blunt weapons can be helpful in controlling the tide of enemies summoned along the way. Don’t expect you to be able to take out Bonemass with ranged weapons like The Elder, as he’ll ignore ranged damage like it was nothing, so you’re going to have to go in and get dirty, at your own risk. For this reason, I suggest you increase your food potential with Lox Meat from the Plains biome. The plains are not safe and are filled with mosquitoes, goblins, and large Loxes. You can easily keep the Lox at a distance as they are very slow and you can cook their pieces for high quality food. Sausage or jam are also suggested, get that health pool as high as possible. If you’re lucky, a Sunken Crypt can be found near the summoning location where you can shoot the Bonemass. If you and your team are fighting near the crypt, you can head deeper into the safety of the dungeon if things get too hot to handle outside. Inside, you can heal yourself and prepare to continue the fight.
Bonemass rewards and beyond
The Bonemass drops a trophy and another important item that can change your interactions in all areas, the Wishbone. The Bonemass Trophy unlocks a new special magical effect that you can activate on Ringed Stones where you transform all boss trophies and give you resistance that can aid you in battle as an activated ability. The other curious drop of Bonemass is the Wishbone, which will allow you to discover silver ore in addition to becoming a kind of treasure compass.
With the Wishbone active (it occupies your “belt” slot), you will hear chimes and see visual cues as you walk through areas that function as a “hot / cold” meter that can lead you to buried treasures, deposits engulfed iron, and more! When you get to the top of the magical pulses and beeps, pull out your pickaxe and start digging! You can find all kinds of useful things underground. If you’re exploring with a team, only one of you should have the Wishbone active, and all other players can see it pulsing on that person. This way, other members of your team can always powerful powerful belts equipped for maximum ore yields!
