How to set up your new Apple Watch

Must read

An Apple Watch, eh? Fancy! Let’s turn this laptop on the right way.

Assuming your watch is already on and charged, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. If you already deleted it, download it again from the App Store. You will need an iPhone running iOS 14, the latest version of iOS. (If you have an Android phone, uh… was there a gift receipt, maybe?) Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are also on. To select Start pairing on the watch, then point your iPhone’s camera at the cute blue pattern that appeared on the face of the watch. Congratulations! They are now linked.

If the automagic does not work, you can also do it manually, by pressing the ‘i’ icon on your watch and typing the six-digit code it spits out into your iPhone.

If you’re on one of the super-groomed Apple Watch models with cellular data on board, it’s worth a visit Apple’s instructions on how to set up data on this device, as you will now have to pay an operator for the data on your watch.

Dial these parameters

Now that the smartwatch and smartphone are one, tap Set up as a new Apple Watch on your iPhone, unless it’s sort of your second or third Apple Watch, in which case you should select Restore from a backup, and maybe also compete with smartwatch purchases. Then choose whether you will wear the watch on your right or left wrist and agree to the terms and conditions.

Next, enter your Apple ID and password (it’s all still on your phone, no text input on that small screen during this process). Then decide if you want to activate Rental services (Yes), Siri (of course), and Diagnostic (meh?). Just keep in mind that your iPhone and watch will mirror each other with these settings; change it on one device, and the other will change as well.

You will then be able to create a password. You should do this, if only for emergency access. You can also save yourself some trouble down the line by telling your Apple Watch to unlock with your iPhone.

Add some apps

And now the homestretch! It’s time for apps. You can either click on Install everything to load any app with Watch functionality onto your phone, or you can use Choose later to winnow the field to your elect. Honestly, you might as well just install them all and cut them off from there. Your choice though! Your watch!

This is basically it; from there, you just have to wait for your iPhone and watch to sync which can take a long time. Once they’re all synced, you should go ahead and tinker with the settings, where you can set up Apple Pay (again, the best!), fine tune your notifications to prevent dozens of apps from constantly ringing your wrist, unless you are so. Other settings options to work? The Activity app, which tracks your movements throughout the day and tells you to get up from time to time; the Sounds and haptics settings, to dictate the volume and length of time the watch tries to get your attention, and Looks, which provide bite-sized information from scan to scan. If your model of Apple Watch has the capacity to take a electrocardiogram reading, definitely go to the Health app and configure the ECG application.

How you set up each of these is entirely up to you, but you’ll probably be happier if you don’t leave it in stock.

And that’s all! You are now officially a Watch person. Don’t let it go on your wrist.
