KL Rahul had a disastrous run in the T20I series. He recorded scores of 1, 0, 0 and 14 in the first four games, and was dropped for the decider as Virat kohli moved up to open.
According to Gambhir, the only way to get KL Rahul back in shape is to have him play matches. The former cricketer said ESPNCricinfo:
“Giving up someone won’t do them any favors. He (Rahul) will have to play three ODIs. Someone’s out of shape, the only way to bring them back is to give them more opportunities.”
“Because when you’re sitting on the bench, it’s not a good feeling. Because you know you’ve been let down, and that feeling isn’t the best feeling,” Gambhir added.
KL Rahul was the best run-getter in the IPL 2020. He was also outstanding in the T20Is in New Zealand early last year, scoring 224 runs in five games at a strike rate of 144.52. However, since returning to the side from a wrist injury, he hasn’t been the same.
Can KL Rahul find a place in the game XI in the first ODI?
Indian captain Virat Kohli confirmed on Monday that Shikhar dhawan and Rohit Sharma will be the first choice forerunners today. Kohli said at a virtual press conference:
“As for the opening combination, Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma) will definitely start. As for cricket for a day, I don’t think there are any issues or doubts with Rohit or Shikhar which open together. “
With Kohli himself slated to enter at number three and Shreyas Iyer occupying slot number four, the only possible way for KL Rahul to make it into the game XI is to keep wickets instead of Rishabh Pant.
On current form, however, the team’s think tank will be hard pressed to let Pant out. The other alternative could be to bring KL Rahul before Iyer. But that would defy the logic of cricket because the latter is in very good shape.
In addition, Suryakumar Yadav himself would be vying for a place of middle order. If he gets the same, that would mark the drummer’s ODI debut.
It is a problem of abundance for India. And in the current scenario, things don’t look so rosy for KL Rahul. Then again, it might only be a matter of time before the fortunes return.
KL Rahul knows a thing or two, having been on the international stage for quite some time now.
