A plane with 56 passengers on board is missing after taking off from the capital Jakarta.

A Sriwijaya Air plane lost contact after taking off from the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Saturday.

The plane was en route to Pontianak on the island of Borneo from West Kalimantan province when it lost
contact, said Adita Irawati, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport.

Sriwijaya Air said in a statement that it was still collecting more detailed information about the flight before it could make a statement.

The plane was carrying 56 passengers, including seven children, and six crew members, Metro TV reported.

Reliable tracking service Flightradar24 said on its Twitter feed that flight SJ182 “lost over 10,000 feet in elevation in less than a minute, about 4 minutes after leaving Jakarta.”

The aircraft is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500, according to registration details included in tracking data.
