Intel registered as research partner on a project focused on , or FHE for short. The Data Protection in Virtual Environments (DPRIVE) program is looking for ways to advance the FHE domain to improve privacy.
In a nutshell, FHE enables encrypted data without having to decrypt it first. This is a major advance for security, but at the moment FHE is not the most practical approach in most cases. According to DARPA, a calculation that takes a fraction of a second on a regular laptop would currently take weeks to complete on a conventional server running FHE. It is essential to find how to mitigate this “performance tax” so that the FHE is one day widely adopted.
As part of a multi-year project, Intel will develop an application-specific integrated circuit accelerator with the aim of accelerating FHE computation times. The company is also working with Microsoft to test the technology on Microsoft Azure and Microsoft JEDI.
IBM is also working on FHE. Last year he to facilitate the use of the encryption method on iOS, macOS and applications.
