At least two Palestinians were injured in what Israel called a retaliatory attack on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.

According to the military, a rocket was fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday evening, shortly after warning sirens sounded in the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon.

Israeli media said the projectile was intercepted by the military’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

No Palestinian group in Gaza has claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, which shattered months of relative calm, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all attacks emanating from Gaza, including those claimed by other Israeli groups. fighters based in the enclave.

The impoverished and densely populated Gaza Strip has been subject to a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007, after Hamas took control of the coastal enclave.

Hamas and Israel reached an agreement in late September to end hostilities, although the attacks continue.

The ceasefire followed a deadly spike in violence and was expected to see Israel authorize new development projects, including an industrial zone and a hospital.

Hamas accused Israel of failing to fully respect the agreement.

Israel, which regards Hamas as a “terrorist” organization, avoids direct negotiations and has never publicly recognized the truce.

Israel has launched three offensives against the Gaza Strip since 2008, and there have been numerous outbreaks.
