Queensland Reds veteran James O’Connor admitted he was hooked on playing for a team in New Zealand before his career was over.

O’Connor, whose parents are from New Zealand, was considering moving to the Chiefs during the offseason, but remained in Australia after the deal was terminated.

While the 30-year-old has said the opportunity to play in New Zealand will be “unreal”, he is more than happy to stay in Queensland.

“You don’t really know what’s going on with COVID, but for me I’m pretty happy here,” he told Nine News.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think it would be an unreal opportunity to go play in this Aotearoa competition. What they did there was pretty special.

“We have great things going on here. We have built now. We are in a position to aim for the title.

“One of the great things about our team is that 90% of us have taken the Queensland route and we are Queenslanders. We love this place and the more you love it the more you want to be there . “

However, O’Connor admitted he was envious of his young teammates, having now become the old boss of the room.

“I watch the kids jogging the field (without) any injuries,” he says with a wry smile.

“They are so young and have so much energy and I’m a little envious sometimes. I’ve been through the summer and I’m in my winter years.”
