Kamaru Usman will be aiming for a third straight defense of his welterweight title when he takes on former teammate Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC 258 on Saturday night at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
The Card is the second UFC pay-per-view event in 2021, following Conor McGregor’s stunning knockout by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on January 23.
Usman was scheduled to face Burns, ranked No.2 last July at UFC 251, but the Brazilian was taken out 10 days before the fight after contracting COVID-19. Usman’s rival Jorge Masvidal stepped in at short notice but was outnumbered by the Nigerian champion.
The former American Top Team teammates both carry significant momentum in the fight.
Usman is leading a 16-game winning streak and has yet to lose in his tenure in the UFC since winning “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2015. Burns has been on a roll since returning to the weight division welterweight in 2019. He has won four in a row in a dominant fashion, with wins over Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Gunnar Nelson and Alexey Kunchenko. But Usman is, by far, his toughest test yet.
Usman and Burns know each other as training partners, but nothing can simulate the feel of a real fight with high stakes.
Will Usman extend his winning streak and start to undermine Georges St-Pierre’s status as the greatest welterweight of all time? Or will Burns hand Usman his first loss and start a new era in the 170-pound division?
