Quick Gun Bowler Mitchell starc retired from the NSW team before their Sheffield Shield confronts Victoria tomorrow after her father Paul lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

Starc has been given compassionate care leave as he and his family face the loss, and NSW Cricket will not set a date for his return.

Also missing from the NSW squad for tomorrow’s Bankstown Oval clash Steve smith, who withdrew due to elbow pain, and Josh Hazlewood, which was rested.

Smith is dealing with an elbow complaint since Australia’s test run against India, which ended on January 19.

“I have had elbow pain that has gradually worsened since the test against India at SCG and it requires some rest and rehabilitation,” Smith said in a statement released by NSW Cricket.

“I hope I’m right to travel with the Blues to Adelaide for our games next week, but we’ll have to see how that responds to treatment.”

While the absence of the Test trio will be a blow to the Blues’ hopes of reversing last week’s disappointing loss to Victoria, they will be bolstered by the return of Pat Cummins, who will play his first Shield match in 16 months.

NSW also added rising stars Liam Hatcher and Jason Sangha to the 13-man squad.
