NASA has shared a shortlist of astronauts eligible for the first Artemis missions to the Moon, and you won’t be surprised to learn that it’s an eclectic mix. The 18 nominees not only cover a range of backgrounds, but include everyone from newcomers to some of its most seasoned veterans.
Eight of the astronauts are from the 2017 class, including Lieutenant-Commander Kayla Barron, Navy SEAL, and Physician Jonny Kim and Curiosity Jessica Watkins, member of the science team. There are also several 2013 veterans, however, including record holder Christina Koch and Crew dragon pilot Victor Glover. Some of the candidates are much more experienced, however: Stephanie Wilson landed her role as an astronaut in 1996, while Joseph Acaba got her place in 2004.
