According to reports from the Wall Street newspaper and BloombergNBC Sports Group President Pete Bevacqua told staff members in a note that cable channel NBC Sports Network was shutting down at the end of this year. While it’s unclear what will happen to some of the content it currently airs, stuff like NHL games and NASCAR races will be transferred to the USA Network instead, and they are planning to duplicate some of them before the channel goes dark.
It might push some content to NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming platform as well, but the immediate goal seems to be to bolster USA Network as an option against channels like Warner’s TNT / TBS. Peacock already wears football, and Sports Business Daily notes that he recently announced his intention to broadcast speed skating. NBCU also has Golf Channel and Olympic Channel, which will continue to broadcast.
