Netflix rejects calls to add disclaimer to ‘The Crown’

Netflix does “not intend” to add a disclaimer to The crown declaring that his lavish drama about the British royal family is a work of fiction.

In a statement on Saturday, Netflix said he always presented drama, like just that – drama.

“We have always presented The crown like a drama – and we are confident that our members understand that this is a work of fiction largely based on historical events, ”he said.

“Accordingly, we have no intention – and see no need – to add a disclaimer.”

Netflix was asked last week by UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to add the warning, following the broadcast of the drama’s fourth series.

Questions of historical fidelity were not a major issue during the first seasons of the series, which debuted in 2016 and traces the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which began in 1952.

But the current fourth season is set in the 1980s, a decade dividing Britain. Characters include Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, whose 11-year tenure transformed and divided Britain, and the late Princess Diana, whose death in a car crash in 1997 left the nation and the world apart.

Some Conservatives have criticized Thatcher’s portrayal on the show, played by Gillian Anderson. Britain’s first female Prime Minister, who died in 2013, is described as a clash with Olivia Colman’s Elizabeth to an extent some say exaggerated.

The crown creator Peter Morgan, whose work also includes recent history dramas The Queen and Frost / Nixon, defended his work, saying it is well studied and true in spirit.

Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, has taken to Netflix to add a warning.

“I think it would help The crown a huge sum if, at the beginning of each episode, he declared that “it is not true, but it is based on real events”, “he told ITV. “I’m afraid people will think this is the gospel and that it is unfair.”
