Many phones have a special back panel with a colorful gradient or shimmering effect. Very few, however, completely change color. (Not without a Dbrand-style case or skin, anyway.) The OnePlus 8T Concept is different, however. The Experimental Phone has a stylish pattern on the back that can switch between light silver and dark blue. According to OnePlus, the design is based on a special film “which contains metal oxide in the glass”, “the valence state of the metal ions varying under different voltages”. Thus, each time the metal oxide activates, the color of the pattern changes, reflecting “water flowing in several shades”, according to an explanation provided by OnePlus.
I know what you are thinking: okay, so what? Well, OnePlus thinks the movie could become a genuinely useful part of the phone. The company says the pattern can be used in combination with a millimeter wave (mmWave), the same technology that underlies 5G, to change colors on command. This means that the pattern may change color or alternate quickly to indicate an incoming call. OnePlus says that an mmWave radar module could allow the user to accept or reject the call without touching the device. The company even suggests that the module can track and, through the film, mimic your breathing, “making the phone a biofeedback device.”
