Parramatta’s risky switch involving playmakers Mitchell Moses and Dylan Brown will continue once again when they take on the Melbourne storm tonight.
Last week’s win over the Broncos saw Eels coach Brad Arthur switch Moses from right to left; Brown vice versa. Rear rower Ryan Matterson followed Moses, while Shaun Lane rocked alongside Brown.
It was a move that surprised many, including Eels legend Peter Sterling who said he struggled to wrap his head around the switch after Parramatta was forced to dig deep in a win from behind against Brisbane.
“I’m still changing Moses and Dylan Brown across the field, along with Shaun Lane and Ryan Matterson,” Sterling told Wide World of Sports’ Sterlo wrap“.
“It did not work. Obviously, this is a work in progress.
“I heard [Eels coach] Brad Arthur said that over the weekend the change was mostly made to accommodate Dylan Brown’s kicking game – to put him on the right side which is the better side for the right kicker. – and to make him participate more.
“Well that had a negative impact on Mitchell Moses early in this game. Because his punching leg is closest to the game, he has to step back inside and he’s off balance.
“As they try to deal with Dylan Brown, who hasn’t kicked a lot anyway, I don’t know if it has worked for Mitchell Moses in this area.”
Rugby league immortal Andrew Johns, who now works closely with Moses and Brown, said the change was a welcoming gesture among the pair.
However, the Eels may need Brown to take on more kicking tasks with Johns saying it’s not a good sign to see Moses, who is a right footed, kicking from the left side of the pitch. .
“They’re more comfortable playing that way,” he told Wide World of Sports.
“They have to be careful because Mitchell Moses last week kicked the left side of the field, which is a right foot. That’s pretty much a no-no.”
