Some roles that will soon be filled reflect a similar goal. Jen Easterly, the current Morgan Stanley head of resilience, Obama administration veteran and co-creator of Cyber order. Biden is set to appoint another Obama member to the White House, Rob Silvers, to head the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Former President Trump fired the former CISA chief, Chris Krebs, after indicating that there was no evidence of digital tampering of the 2020 presidential election.
They are a team of “world-class” cybersecurity experts, Microsoft vice president Tom Burt said in a statement.
These measures are in stark contrast to the Trump administration, which has generally played down cybersecurity. Although the previous government did elevate the role of Cyber Command and help establish an integrated cyber center to coordinate responses, he also gave up the role of White House cybersecurity coordinator, downsized the State Department’s digital diplomacy unit, and fired Krebs. Trump himself falsely claimed that Russia had stopped cyber attacks and tried to pass the blame for hacking SolarWinds in China despite growing evidence of Russian involvement.
The new team could do more to help the United States both respond to the SolarWinds incident and protect itself against future hacks. However, there are concerns that this is not enough. Former homeland security cybersecurity director Amit Yoran has warned that there needs to be a “good balance” between public and private sector backgrounds – and many of the appointments are government alumni. Success will be measured in the United States’ ability to fend off hackers going forward, of course, but it’s not certain that many of the new hires will bring new thinking to the table.
