Pro-Donald Trump protesters, shocked by the outcome of the presidential election, stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday as Congress met to count the electoral votes that certify Joe Biden’s election as president.
Protesters overwhelmed US Capitol Police outside and many protesters breached security and entered the Capitol building, creating a scene of chaos and forcing members of Congress to flee the House and Senate chambers to be locked up safely in their offices while some were evacuated elsewhere.
At around 2 p.m. (7 p.m. GMT), as Senators debated an objection to Arizona’s electoral votes raised by Republican Trump supporters, debate was halted when it became known that protesters were in the area. room outside the Senate Chamber.

As the protests escalated, Trump first tweeted more criticism of his Vice President Mike Pence, who chaired the Congressional vote count, then urged his supporters to “stay in peace!” ” a request that does not seem to have been heeded.

The Associated Press reports that one person was shot dead on Capitol Hill amid a scuffle with pro-Trump protesters.
At least one protester walked into the Senate Chamber and shouted “Trump won this election” from the podium.

Protesters entered the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Pelosi had been evacuated from the area and her daughter said his mother is safe).

Trump’s former White House communications director Alyssa Farah pleaded with the president to condemn the protesters, saying “you’re the only one they’ll listen to.”

Shortly after Farah’s call, Trump tweeted, “I ask everyone on the US Capitol to stay peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Law and Order Party – obey the law and our great men and women in blue. Thank you!”

Trump supporters in Congress are speaking out against the violence and begging the president to get things under control.
Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy, who backed the Republican plan to oppose electoral votes in some states in Wednesday’s count, said in an American TV interview: “What we are currently watching is not happening. not American. I’m disappointed. I’m sad. This is not what our country should look like. “

As overwhelmed law enforcement attempted to cope with the swarms of protesters, Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser implemented a citywide curfew at 9:00 p.m. GMT. Bowser had preemptively requested National Guard help earlier this week and White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that Trump had ordered the National Guard to surrender to the U.S. Capitol.
