Returnal’s new trailer shines a light on his sci-fi weapons and battles

A new trailer for Return gives us a look at some of the unique weapons players will use to survive its hostile alien world. With the game just a few months away, this is the first time players have delved deep into his fight.

Returnal combines third-person action with a roguelike structure. Players control Selene, an astronaut who crashes on a strange planet controlled by a mysterious time loop. Each time Selene dies, she is reborn and relives the same events over and over again. Roguelike, this also means that its inventory starts from zero with each cycle (although some elements persist).

The developer Housemarque took to the PlayStation Blog to break up Returnal’s fight, which combines third-person filming with the studio’s signature arcade-style action. The base weapons are supplemented by various weapon traits that change their performance, such as the shell explosion for the shotgun-shaped Spitmaw Blaster. Players can stack traits to combine the same effects for “surprising results” in the heat of the moment. In total, there are 10 basic weapons and 90 weapon traits (with three levels each). However, Selene can only hold one weapon at a time, so players should choose wisely while experimenting with different loadouts to find suitable combinations.

The guns have two fire modes activated by the adaptive triggers of the Dual Sense controller. Pressing the aim button halfway activates one fire mode and pushing it all the way activates the second. This creates a seamless exchange between fire modes, which are randomly assigned to the guns that go through each cycle. Other weapons featured include the Ground Spike, a tool that impales creatures with a massive spike, and the Atropian Blade, a sword that can shatter shields and block projectiles.

In terms of non-weapon gadgets, the Bittersweet Parasite might be the most unique. This strange organism clings to Selene and grants additional health with each kill, but enemies slain leave pools of harmful acid behind. Returning has other elements of risk vs rewards, such as cursed chests that grant valuable treasure at the expense of negative status illness, such as taking damage when opening doors.

After having cut his teeth with arcade style games like Nex Machina and Resogun, Returnal is Housemarque’s biggest release yet and he seems to be preparing well. We can’t wait to get our hands on it when it launches March 19 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
