Rhyce Shaw to join Gold Coast Suns in development role months after Kangaroos release

A revitalized Rhyce shaw set to be appointed head of development for the Gold Coast Suns in 2021, just months after stepping down as North Melbourne head coach.

According to Age, Shaw is now in “good health” and is ready to move north to further his coaching career.

Shaw ended his term as the Kangaroos coach in October after stepping down due to mental health issues.

The decision to join the Suns is also a reunion between Shaw and Suns senior coach Stuart Dew after the pair acted as understudies for Swans coach John Longmire in Sydney.

Shaw is likely to be heavily involved with the Suns’ talented core, which includes Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Izak Rankine, Ben King and recent scout Elijah Hollands, as the club aim to qualify for the first time from its history.

The 39-year-old coached the Kangaroos to 10 wins in 29 games as a manager after being given the permanent role following the moving response he received from players when taking over from Brad Scott during the 2019 season.

Shaw’s return to training after a brief hiatus comes as no surprise, having indicated he would like to return in a touching letter to North Melbourne after his departure.

“Despite the challenges of the past year, my passion for football remains,” Shaw said at the time.

“The experiences I have had throughout my career developing young footballers to reach their potential have given me the greatest satisfaction and pride, and I hope I have the opportunity to contribute again to this great game in the future.

“For now, however, my focus is on taking the time, and I would ask that my privacy and that of my family continue to be respected at this time.”
