Roy Williams to UNC fans questioning Marquette game: ‘I can’t function in hindsight’

Roy Williams failed to reach 900 career coaching wins on Wednesday night as North Carolina lost double-digit to Marquette under 0.500 at home in a staged game last weekend. The result has raised doubts from fans who see it as damaging the Tar Heels’ cause for an overall NCAA tournament offer.

Williams was questioned at his post-game press conference for his response to the seconds. If they understood the answer, especially the ending, they probably felt even more frustrated.

For the sake of context, here’s the full exchange:

Q: “What would you say to the Carolina fans who are wondering whether or not it makes sense to schedule this game, given the result?”

A: “Well, if I had known we were going to lose, Almighty God, I wouldn’t have programmed it. Come on, we can’t operate in hindsight, Almighty God. Said we were gonna lose, so damn it, yeah, we wouldn’t have played the game. If you’d told me we were gonna beat the Lakers, I would’ve scheduled them. Carolina fans, they don’t. are not this stupid. If they are, I have no answer for them. “

And that was the end of Williams’ presser.

The lakers are having problems at the moment; they were blown away by the Jazz in Utah on Wednesday night and lost four in a row. But we digress.

The Heels are 14-8 (8-5 ACC) with just three regular season games to go before next month’s ACC tournament. Williams wanted his team to play (and win) an end-of-season game against a top-tier program (in this case, a Big East team). It did not work.

Now he receives the grief of the fans who become critical after the fact, given the outcome.
