In order to build a ship in Valheim, you will need to have placed a Worktable nearby and have your Hammer ready in your toolbar.
When selecting the Hammer, enter the miscellaneous tab and select a raft, drakkar or karve. As you will soon find out, each ship has its own advantage – whether in terms of speed, durability, and even seating for players. If this is your first time building a boat in Valheim, you will probably be looking to build a raft. While this is one of the more difficult ships to manage, one raft will definitely be more than enough to meet your needs from the start of the game. You can read more about the different ships below, as well as how each ship was made in Valheim.

How to control your raft
Let’s face it, sailing in Valheim is not exactly easy, especially when you are just starting out. While it may seem simple in concept, using the rather clunky mechanics properly can be a bit tricky, even for the more experienced sailor. So to start sailing in Valheim, hop aboard your raft and wield the rudder by pressing E. Now that you are holding the rudder, you can start moving the raft forward by pressing W to release your sail, or in pressing S will roll your canopy and you will start to reverse. In turn, pressing A will direct you to the left and pressing D will direct you to the right. As you turn the rudder, you will probably have noticed that a small yellow steering wheel has appeared at the top of the grip. This yellow wheel will play a key role in controlling your raft.
As you start to turn the wheel, you will start to notice a small yellow bar that will appear around the outer edge of the wheel, which will indicate how far right or left you are turning on the rudder.
You will also notice that as you increase and decrease the speed, three small arrows will appear above the yellow steering wheel. This will indicate how fast you are traveling.
How to navigate with the wind
Now that you’ve got the general downswing, you’re probably wondering how you can start picking up speed? Well, this is where things start to get a bit trickier, as being able to successfully navigate your raft will take a bit of practice.
Before you can start sailing, you will need to understand the fundamentals of using wind to your advantage.
First, the wind direction can currently be indicated by two different methods:
- A small white arrow that can be found in the lower left corner of your minimap.
- A golden ship with a white wind icon that can be found just below your minimap.
While the white arrow on your minimap is a great way to get a quick overview of the general wind direction, using the large golden ship icon will give you a much more detailed look at how the wind will affect your navigation.
As you can see in the image above, the golden ship icon indicates the direction in which your ship is moving. While the white wind icon shows the direction the wind is blowing.
If you are looking to go long distances, you will ideally want to have the wind against your back, as this will help you reach your highest speed.
Note that the wind is dynamic and will change frequently, so if your wind icon has turned gray, it usually means that you are no longer sailing with the wind direction.
If you are traveling against the wind or your wind icon turns gray, we strongly recommend that you use the paddle option (an arrow), as it will allow you to move forward slowly, but steadily, as sailing in the wind will stop you normally. dead in the water.
