Video streaming services have transformed the way we watch content at home and on the go, but the enduring problem of what to watch next hasn’t gone away – in fact, with so much to watch and so little time, the problem only got worse.
If you share a laptop, tablet or big screen TV with other people, then your viewing choices and all the cool features of your favorite streaming service – so you can pick up right where you left off at recommendations on what you want to watch next —Can be easily mixed up as everyone in your household uses your streaming accounts.
There is a solution: user profiles. The best streaming services allow you to segment the viewing between you and four or five other family members or roommates, so you can always go straight to what you want to watch. Here’s how to configure it on each platform.
Note that we’ll be giving you instructions on how to set up these profiles on the web, which is the easiest approach, but any changes you make will be reflected on your other devices, from set-top boxes to smartphones.
Amazon Prime Video
With Video premium open in your web browser, you can click on your account name at the top right of the toolbar, then choose Add new to start configuring additional profiles. All you need to enter is a name and specify whether or not the account is child-owned or not (if so, only child-friendly content will be available when that particular user is logged in), then click Save changes.
You can open the same drop-down menu in the toolbar to switch users (just click on the name) and to access the Manage profiles page. All you can really do from this page is change the name of the profile or get rid of it altogether, but Prime Video will keep the viewing history and viewing recommendations separate for each profile regardless of the profile. device you are using to watch.
Netflix
When you are logged in Netflix in your web browser, hover the mouse cursor over your user avatar (top left), then navigate to Manage profiles. Click on Add Profile To do this, you will be prompted to provide a name for the profile first, then you can set an avatar image and various user preferences (like auto-play episodes).
During the profile creation process, you will be asked if you want to set it up as a child profile, which means you can place restrictions on it in terms of maturity rates and what types of content can be displayed. These and other settings (including the appearance of your subtitles) can be set from the account preferences page on the web.
Hulu
When you logged in Hulu on the web, hover your mouse cursor over your account name in the upper right corner of the screen, and choose Add Profile in the menu that appears. Hulu asks you to fill in a few quick details, such as a name and date of birth. There is also a Kids fashion option that you can activate if needed, which makes more mature content banned.
