Halep and Swiatek both comfortably won a set each in the first two sets, with the game going to a decision maker taken by Halep in an exciting way.

Halep beat the first in the third set and led 2-0 before 19-year-old Swiatek responded to the challenge and returned to tie the scores at 2-2.

But Halep, a two-time Grand Slam winner who has yet to win the Australian Open title, was not denied when she broke again in the third set, which turned out to be too much for Swiatek as the Romanian star served the game.

“It was a tough game. I knew she would hit really hard. Her topspin and forehand are really hard to come back to,” Halep said of Nine.

“After the first set I said I had to change something, and I think I took a step back and tried to roll the ball more and make her run. Close to the body she hits really hard. “

Tonight’s comeback wasn’t the first time in this tournament Halep was forced to stage a comeback, as she defended a set against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round.

Halep will now face Williams in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
