Boris Johnson and the EU on Sunday set a deadline for a “firm decision” on the fate of their future talks on relations after three hours of talks in Brussels that exposed the divisions between the two sides.

A UK government official said “huge gaps remain between the two sides” after a dinner in Brussels between Mr Johnson and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The meeting was presented by both sides as an attempt to break the deadlock in the negotiations with just three weeks before Britain leaves the single market.

The two leaders “agreed to continue discussions over the next few days between their negotiating teams” and that “by Sunday a firm decision should be taken on the future of the talks,” the official said.

Discussions are dead end on how to maintain fair competition for business and on the fate of EU fishing rights in UK waters. Ms von der Leyen will brief EU leaders on the results of her talks with Mr Johnson at a summit on Thursday.
