A combination of cabin fever, closed gyms and need for speed lead many people to take to the streets – not to protest, but to walk up and down sidewalks, along river banks and in neighborhood parks. I won’t be entering a yoga studio anytime soon, but the routes are free (if you are running in a crowded area, be sure to wear a mask).
If you’re just starting your running adventure, I’ve rounded up some of the gear that gets me out there every day, along with some getting started tips. Don’t forget to also consult our Best fitness trackers and Best running shoes guides and all the materials that helped the former WIRED editor run faster marathons in your 40s.
Update February 2021: We’ve added our favorite cold weather running picks, like the Lululemon High-Rise Fast and Free Running Tights.
Special offer for Gear readers: get a One year subscription to WIRED for $ 5 ($ 25 off). This includes unlimited access to WIRED.com and our print magazine (if you wish). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.
