HBO The last of us The series officially has a new director. Oscar nominees Bean Director Kantemir Balagov to direct adaptation of hit post-apocalyptic adventure game Naughty Dog, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Beanpole, a drama centered on two women from Leningrad after World War II, was shortlisted as Russia for Best International Feature for the 92nd Academy Awards in 2019, but ultimately lost to South Korea’s Parasite. Beanpole won Balagov the award for best director at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.

Balagov also directed the 2017 drama Closeness, a drama centered around the kidnapping of a young couple and the ransom that followed.

Balagov’s dark aesthetic is likely a factor in HBO’s decision to hire him, likely ensuring a somber tone in keeping with the original game’s heartbreaking storyline, and likely pairs well with writer and executive producer Craig Mazin. . Mazin’s Chernobyl series was also known to be visually and thematically dark.

It was originally announced that the project would bring together Mazin and Chernobyl director Johan Renck, at least for the first episode, but THR reports he dropped out due to a scheduling conflict.
