Amazon dominates online sales. It dominates web services. It’s also a force to be reckoned with in streaming video. It does, however, seem terrible for making games.

The last proof is another delay for the lukewarm, if not highly anticipated New world MMO game. It was initially to be launched in May 2020. Then in August 2020. Then in May 2021. Now, it’s August 2021. But who knows? Maybe there is another delay around the corner.

Amazon

So far, Amazon Game Studios has outlined its plans to continue testing the game’s alpha, with an open beta slated for July 20. New worldThe previous delay came a week after Amazon slashed the availability of its first major game, Crucible – an Overwatch-style game that lacked the charm (and player base) of its inspiration. Three months later, the team stopped absolutely.

Fortunately, the studio is part of one of the biggest and most profitable companies on the planet, and its new CEO, Andy Jassy, seems to have his back for the time being. He wrote in an internal email: “Some companies take off in the first year, and some take many years. I think we will if we hang on.”

Amazon is learning what many big tech companies already know: Success in the games industry takes time. Just ask Google. Or better yet, ask Microsoft – the latest big tech company to succeed in the game.

Elsewhere, the White House is relying on tech companies for information on the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines, and Marvel’s documentary series kicks off with a behind-the-scenes look at WandaVision.

It will be released on Disney + on March 12, a week after the WandaVision season 1 finale and just a little too late to explain what’s going on. Continue reading.

A White House spokesman said officials were speaking to several large companies.

The Biden administration is in talks with Amazon and several other Silicon Valley tech companies to help deploy COVID-19 vaccines across the country. White House spokesman Kevin Munoz said Politico that officials “consult with many companies, including Amazon,” to help distribute medical supplies.

A January NPR article reported that Amazon was able to administer 2,000 vaccines from a pop-up clinic in Seattle in a single day. Continue reading.

Andrson finds songs that sound like your favorites.

Andrson

Andrson tries to make it easier for music labels to find future stars, but that’s not the only thing it’s useful for. Today, the company is launching ReWrapped, which scans your Spotify favorites to find sound tracks from its unsigned artist list. It analyzes your own Spotify Wrapped playlist and selects a handful of songs from emerging artists that (algorithmically) match your best songs.

Dan Cooper has tested it and argues that just because something looks similar doesn’t mean you will like it. Yet, it offers a new way to escape the same playlists and artists we all gravitate towards. Continue reading.
