Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao resigned of its position. In a message posted to Twitter, Chao said she was “deeply disturbed” by “the traumatic and utterly preventable event as supporters of the president stormed the Capitol building following a rally to which he addressed.
Chao, who is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is the first cabinet secretary to resign amid the violence in Washington DC.As the country’s chief transportation official, Chao oversaw policies governing autonomous cars and other emerging technology like the hyperloop. She also played a central role in the decision of the United States on the ground Boeing 737 Max planes in 2019.
