Health experts have called for expanded home testing to make it easier for people to determine if they have COVID-19 and, if so, to avoid contact with others. However, scaling up manufacturing can take some time.

Most tests still require healthcare professionals to take a nasal swab, many of which are sent to labs for analysis. The FDA previously approved other tests which can deliver results in less than 15 minutes.

Many airlines and countries require proof negative COVID-19 test before allowing travelers to fly or enter the country. Having the ability to perform a home test with quick results could make it easier for people to travel when needed.
