US Sanctions Nicaraguan Officials and Cuban-Linked Companies | Latin America News

The sanctions are the latest from the Trump administration targeting Nicaraguan officials backing Daniel Ortega.

On Monday, the United States imposed sanctions on three Nicaraguan officials for their support for the leftist government of President Daniel Ortega.

President Donald Trump’s administration has maintained a steady stream of sanctions announcements since the November election that saw Democrat Joe Biden win. President-elect Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20.

The US Treasury Department said it had blacklisted officials, including the vice president of the Supreme Court of Nicaragua, in an attempt to target those who continued to aid the Ortega government’s efforts to undermine democracy. .

“This administration remains determined to target the Ortega regime by seeking out and denouncing those who continue to suppress the democratic will of the Nicaraguan people,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in the statement.

The officials on the blacklist are Marvin Ramiro Aguilar Garcia, vice-president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Nicaragua; Walmaro Antonio Gutierrez Mercadeo, Member of the National Assembly; and Fidel De Jesus Dominguez Alvarez, Chief of the National Police of the City of Leon.

In a separate action on Monday, the Trump administration imposed Cuba-related sanctions on three companies it accused of being run by the Cuban military and evading existing sanctions.

The companies on the blacklist are: Grupo de Administración Empresarial SA, Financiera Cimex SA and Kave Coffee, SA.
