According to Ahmad, current Steam accounts will work with both versions of the software, like most games – provided there is a version of the title specifically designed for the Chinese market. As it is, it is still possible to access the international customer in China “without problem”, but that could change if the country decides to ban it.

If that happened, gamers would lose access to countless unlicensed games. And it is not an unfounded fear either. At the end of last year, Apple removed approximately 39000 games from the App Store in China so as not to have an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) from the Chinese government. We’ve reached out to Valve for confirmation of the release date, and we’ll update this article when we hear from the company.
