Oh baby. Buckle up your belt.
It will be an all-North American battle on the ice when Canada and the United States face off for gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship on Tuesday in Edmonton. The teams will meet in the title match for the first time since 2017, when the United States won 5-4 in a shootout over a Troy Terry goal against Carter Hart.
In the 2021 edition, the teams have advanced to their confrontation in quite different ways. The United States needed a goal 76 seconds from time by Arthur Kaliyev of New York to beat Finland 4-3 in the semifinals, while the Canadians easily sent Russia 5-0.
“This day has been marked in all our calendars since we arrived,” said Alex Newhook, who scored Canada’s first goal with less than a minute of his Monday game against the Russians. “To finally be here and see that the work we’ve done is paying off so far, it’s exciting. We’re excited to bring that mindset tomorrow and play our game the best we can. ‘gold.”
Bragging rights will also be at stake as a number of players take on their current team-mates – like Dylan Holloway (Canada) and Cole Caufield (United States) from Wisconsin – and future ones, including goalkeepers Spencer Knight ( United States) and Devon Levi (Canada), who are Panthers draft picks.
“Obviously it will be a great game,” said American John Farinacci. “It’s something you dream of. The United States, Canada and a gold medal game will always be a fun game and we have to play a full 60 minutes if we are to win that gold medal. “
