Former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris, wore different shades of purple for the event. Some have speculated that the choice was a nod to a mix of blue and red, the colors associated with the Democratic and Republican parties, and symbolized a call for unity.
Others noted that Harris often chose to wear purple during her presidential campaign in 2019. This was to honor late Congressman Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to run for President of the United States. , who also wore purple during his campaign.
