Tim Tszyu’s “Steel City Showdown” against Brisbane Irishman Dennis Hogan is in danger of being called off.
It has been revealed that Hogan is suffering from a nose injury and is in doubt whether he will take his place for their world title elimination at Newcastle Entertainment Center on March 31, according to News Corp. The report claims the nose could be broken.
Hogan said he will undergo a medical exam this afternoon to assess the damage before deciding whether he will actually participate in combat.
“I have a small injury to my nose but that doesn’t mean I’m unable to fight,” Hogan told the publication.
“I will have an assessment from the medical team this afternoon.”
A cancellation would be a blow to Tszyu, who has his sights set on a world title against new WBO super-welterweight champion Brian Castano.
When the Australian promoter was contacted about the injury reports, George Rose of No Limit said he was not aware of any issues with Hogan’s camp.
If the fight is called off, it would almost certainly be too late to stage a ring-in to take Hogan’s place.
Even if they did get a replacement, it would be doubtful the fight would be a title eliminator.
Hogan is Australia’s best super welterweight Tszyu hasn’t faced and fighting anyone ahead of a potential clash with Castano would be considered risky at best, if the WBO allowed it.
If Tszyu’s camp brought in someone from abroad, then it would take a two-week quarantine.
Hogan’s management is expected to make a call later tonight after the extent of the injury is known.
