Kevin Walters is waiting for a call from Cameron Smith, hoping the future Immortal will put his retirement aside for a swan song from the Broncos.

Walters believes Brisbane still has a chance to sign Smith this season despite the former Storm captain being silent on his plans for 2021.

“We just don’t know. It’s a mystery so we’ll stick to the chase,” Walters told Nine News.

Now living on the Gold Coast, Smith was an interested spectator during the Titans preseason trial at Burleigh on Friday night, but Walters would love the 37-year-old to put on his boots for one more season on the highway.

Smith said at a take-out lunch on the Sunshine Coast on Friday that he “still has one big decision to make” but at this point Walters and the Broncos are as much in the dark as the rest of the competition.

“We’re not the wisest, so we’re just going to sit and wait and watch it all unfold. That’s all we can do,” Walters said.

“I think all clubs would love to have him in their books. For all we know, he could still run for the Storm.”

No one from the Broncos has spoken to Smith about joining the club, but Walters doesn’t think it’s necessary to pick up the phone.

“I think he would probably be aware that we are interested.
