Robbie Gray had thrown matching game-winning goals on several occasions before Friday night duel with Richmond – and the Port Adelaide champion stepped up again to secure the victory for Power.
The four-time All Australian outshined Jayden Short to take a formidable contested hold with four minutes left on the clock, before landing a shot from a difficult angle at 45 yards to take the lead of his team.
A scoreless and frenetic passage of play then played out as power clung to a two-point victory to avenge. Last year’s preliminary final loss to the Tigers, winning 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77) at Adelaide Oval.
Vitally, Port Adelaide’s victory means they are 3-1 to start the season and return to the top four, having responded winningly to last week’s dismemberment at the hands of the west coast.
On the contrary, reigning Richmond Premiers are now in uncharted territory, having suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since last season’s third and fourth rounds. Power was beaten last week by swans and, after Friday’s loss, now occupy sixth place.
Fox Footy commentator James Brayshaw summed it up perfectly as Gray scored the goal in Power’s thrilling victory over the Tigers.
“He knows how to kick them when the game is on, Robbie Gray,” Brayshaw said.
“It was absolutely beautiful.”
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was clearly a satisfied man when asked about Gray’s kick during his post-game press conference.
“I’m glad he’s playing for us,” Hinkley said with a smile.
“It was a great finish.”
Gray scored a game-winning goal to secure a stunning Port Adelaide victory over St Kilda in the 19th round 2017.
The three-time Best and Fairest winner collected a pristine Paddy Ryder tap and pierced the sticks while running from the 50-yard arc to steal the lead with just 10 seconds remaining.
He then produced more heroism in the seventh round of last season, draining a hard angle fixed shot from the right front pocket after the siren to break Carlton’s hearts.
