Australian leg rotation legend Shane Warne has offered a plug-and-play option for the New Year’s test as Cricket Australia grapples with the COVID-19 outbreak on the beaches of northern Sydney.
The governing body is considering moving the match, traditionally played at Sydney Cricket Ground, Melbourne Cricket Ground or Gabba, while playing the third and fourth tests at SCG are also options.
But the biggest wicket-taker in Australian cricket history has suggested Cricket Australia consider Geelong’s Kardinia Park.
“Maybe it could be somewhere like Geelong,” Warne told Fox.
“Maybe they play two in Melbourne. People over there on the peninsula – they’re hungry for cricket over there and have watched every Big Bash League game.
“Maybe they could do it in Geelong if they wanted to play two at (bigger) Melbourne, rather than two at MCG.
“Otherwise (Geelong) Canberra is also a very good alternative.
“It’s a very good setup there with great facilities, great terrain and good conditions.”
The Melbourne Renegades have hosted BBL games at Kardinia Park, the same venue the Geelong Cats call home, and its 36,000-seat capacity gives the games an intimate feel.
But Cricket Australia might be reluctant to play the game in such a small capacity venue, given the crowd caps that currently exist in Victoria.
The MCG will only be allowed to accommodate 30,000 per day for the Boxing Day test.
