A cool season means fresh faces and new opportunities.
Especially in Super Rugby AU this year as the game kicks off a bold new era in collaboration with Nine and Stan Sport.
So we asked former Wallaby Morgan Turinui to identify the stars and players to watch in the 2021 season, which will kick off with a double header on Friday night February 19.
Turinui is part of the Nine / Stan commentary team and is considered one of the sharpest minds in rugby.
DAVE PORECKI (NSW Waratahs prostitute)
Turin: Dave will be the # 1 hooker in the Tahs, I think. He had the opportunity to develop more at London Irish (2016-20), played a good mark of football.
I was impressed with what I saw of him and can’t wait to see him in a Tahs jersey.
I think that will give them a maturity edge that they need and that’s really great for a less experienced team, having a guy with significant experience.

They have a lot of sophomores like (Will) Harrison and sophomore is tough for a lot of guys.
Whether it’s that hard because it’s Super Rugby AU and you don’t get the Kiwi and Saffa exam week after week, we’ll see.
But we saw most of the players wrestle in that second year as the teams watched them better.
So this young cohort at the Tahs, it will be great to have a guy like Porecki who has had other experiences and I just think he’s a good footballer.
He can give them a physical advantage but also be excellent in his lead role.
If you can’t pitch and you can’t meddle, there’s no point being a whore.
It’s great if you can hit and carry and go for the ball, but we need guys who hit the target at lineout time and do their job at scrum time.
We learn this more and more as we go.
The basic and basic skills required for a job, especially a specialist like the whore – they just aren’t negotiable.
Israel Folau shouldn’t be welcomed back into NRL, says Drew Mitchell
And there are opportunities at the Wallaby level.
Brandon Paenga-Amosa has had a great season, Folau Fainga’a – but no one has really grabbed it and said ‘I want it’ since Stephen Moore.
(Tolu) Latu is abroad, Fainga’a is good, Paenga-Amosa is good, (Jordan) Uelese needs a block of time in the saddle – so there are a lot of candidates there.
(Tom) Horton at the Tahs and guys like that, there’s an opportunity but Porecki is a little awkward guy that people won’t know much about.
He’s a manly junior, a local guy, but maybe people haven’t seen him much.
I think it will be good for them, especially for what they need.
LEN IKITAU (Brumbies Center)
Turin: I think everyone is really looking forward to seeing some more of Len Ikitau’s football at the Brums.
Obviously, he’s got something about him if he’s in and around these high-end teams (Wallabies in 2020) even though he doesn’t see it much.
The advantage of the Brumbies is that you know they are developing players well.
They are very good at getting players into the game and they are very successful very quickly.
It’s a great advertisement for their program and their coaching staff, how they prepare them.
You know, when a young man comes to the Brumbies, you can be sure he can compete and perform.
And Len is a guy we have to start seeing this week after week.
We know the potential, have heard of the potential, we have to start seeing this week after week.
ROB VALETINI (Backrower Brumbies)
Turin: It’s an important year for a guy like Valetini.
A few judges recognized him early on, including Wallaby’s layouts under Michael Cheika and Dave Rennie.
I was almost a little surprised when he wasn’t picked right away in the Rugby Champs and spent some time off the bench.
I think it’s a year where he’s mature enough and he’s trained enough that it’s a breakout year for him.
It’s not that you want to pressure him, but this is his year of opportunity where if the Brumbies are doing well then he has to play well and cement the starting spot.
He must be their ultimate ball carrier, their essential physical executor.
He needs to improve his line-up work and things like that, which he’s done, but if they’re going to face a team like the Reds backrow or the Rebels – who are always confrontational, physical and tough on the pitch. ball it’s a year that if he wants to be a Wallaby backrower, he has to be head and shoulders above the rest this year.
It’s different, not so much to watch but one that we would love to see grow.
TREVOR HOSEA (Melbourne rebel lock)
Turin: Hosea always had the body, the size, the physical attributes required.
I watched him play for this pseudo Australian A team against Argentina at TG Millner Sportsground.
And it was obvious he was trying to keep up with the level.
But what impressed me – he was pretty cooked in this game, he played great minutes – but he just kept going.
And he’s a guy who I think will benefit so much from being in this Wallaby environment.
I can’t wait to see what he looks like physically, when he is exhausted in Super Rugby.
He went from Super Rugby to this really intense Wallaby camp – they trained hard throughout, especially the guys who don’t play Test Soccer. It was tough mentally.
You’re in quarantine and bubble up, you don’t play football a lot but train and train with Dean Benton (National Athletic Performance Manager at Rugby Australia) and guys like that.
So I hope he hasn’t regressed during the break and is able to get back up and bounce back physically.
HUNTER PAISAMI (Queensland Reds center)
Turin: Last year was a brilliant first season where he came from – excellent and raw.
I saw him move on to the Rebels (as an assistant coach) and it was always obvious he had talent. He had some issues off the field there and then got that opportunity at the Reds.
It was great to see him get better and better as the year went on. Many people considered him to be an abrasive physical center, but by the way, he still had good skills.
So people looked at him and saw him flourish in his role.
There are a lot of raw things he needs to hone in his game, but he can kick and pass and it will get better and better as he works at it and he gets more and more up to speed. comfortable in this position.
He was a kid learning on the job last year and he can have a huge influence on the Reds and Wallabies in the future.
ISI NAISARANI (rebel backrower)
I saw him at the end of this Wallaby season last year and he looked fit and in shape – he looked great. Like he just looked different in the training shirts.
So it was great to see him back in the environment and grab that second opportunity after missing the selection and physically undressing. He looked great.
It’s another when he puts on his jersey, you can see how serious he is. We all know, him at his best, in shape and shooting, he’s an amazing weapon to have on your soccer team, whether it’s Super or Test footy.
So I can’t wait to see his physical capabilities this season and how he can influence the makeup of Super Rugby.
If he’s fit and shoots, gets a lot of balls, and the Rebels give a guy like that a platform, he could be anything this season.
