Anodyne 2 is a deeply personal 2D and 3D adventure filled with whimsical mystery, and you don’t need to have played the first one Calming to enjoy the rest. You play as Nova, a Nano Cleaner working for The Center, the mysterious ruler of New Theland. Nova must wipe out the Nano Dust that plagues the minds of the citizens by shrinking and moving from the low-poly 3D overworld and entering top-down 2D “dungeons” hidden within every being. Explore the mysteries that surround the world. Maintain the status quo of collecting Nano Dust or seek a new way of life; It’s yours!
Created only by Marina Kittaka and me, Anodyne 2 features layered characters, a love for the subversion of genre conventions, meta-narratives that offer insight behind the curtain, and more! You’ll travel through vast surreal landscapes hiding wonderful secrets, embrace the logic of dreams to transform into a car, and then explore the limits of New Theland to learn that the ideals of the Center aren’t necessarily held by everyone. Use Nova’s Nano Vacuum to solve puzzles and fight bosses while vacuuming up dust. Every being you cleanse will bring you closer to the truth behind the Center.
Marina spent about a year and a half on Anodyne 2: Back to dust. We learned a lot by creating the first Calming, and I wanted to see which elements would fit into a 3D context! The low-poly design inspired by 90s consoles leaves plenty of visual details to the imagination, giving gamers a dreamy atmosphere. Our 2D experience of Calming is not lost in the sequel and can be found in every “dungeon” spirit.
