Basic navigation
- All the key locations you need to visit to advance the story will be marked on your minimap with a yellow diamond icon.
- If you ever get lost during the story, hold down the R key to quickly check your current goals.
Your very first treasure chest is at your bedside – don’t skip it!
The travelogue
The travel journal is your friend. If you have any questions, you can browse the “Tutorials” section by opening your main menu and selecting “Travel Diary”, “Memories” and “Tutorials”.
The Travel Diary section of the menu also gives you access to:
- Details of all the quests you have taken
- Parameters related to quest markers
- Group chat events and scenes you’ve already encountered
- All the tutorials you unlocked
It’s always a great place to go if you need advice on your travels.
Fighting Tips for Beginners
- If you find a member of your party affected by the confusion or spell, use another member’s combat command “Attack” on the afflicted party member; preferably someone who has a weak physical attack like Black Mage or White Mage.
- Save your Phoenix Downs and frequently rest at an Inn to restore HP and MP using items. You can also collect tents from the Item Shop to collect HP / MP and heal combat status ailments while in the field or at a save point.
- Don’t be stingy when you stock up on Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Down!
- Plus, as you progress through the story and complete side quests, new items will become available in stores, so check back often!
- Your first instinct may be to pick up the biggest and most dangerous weapon in the Item Shop, but you need to think about its weight first. If you overload yourself with gear that’s too heavy for your character, you’ll run into all kinds of problems. Check your weight stat in your attributes page and note the overload notification on any weapons or armor you equip.
- In addition to weapons and armor, you can also equip accessories. Some props boost stats and even create a barrier against spells and combat status disorders, so choose wisely.
- Don’t sell anything. Horde everything. You never know what might be of help. Make sure you stock up on healing items before you go! You never know what you might need for your adventure.
Tips for dungeons and exploration
- When you are in a dungeon, you sometimes come across a bright blue circle on the ground. These are special portals that can take your party to and from the dungeon entrance in an instant. This can be really useful if you need to get out into the field and rest in a tent, or head back into town and upgrade your gear. Use them as checkpoints to help you progress safely through dangerous dungeons.
- In the dungeons, you will also come across save points where you can save your progress and rest in a tent. If things get tough in a dungeon and there is no save point or portal handy, you can use a teleportation stone to escape to the dungeon entrance.
- Talk to everyone – you never know who will give you items or what advice the NPCs may have for you. By talking to NPCs with blue dialogs above their heads, you can even start special side quests to receive rare items or even rarer asterisks!
- When you’re in a new location, go to every store and crevasse – there are treasure chests everywhere!
- If you find yourself in a particularly difficult dungeon, you can use a teleportation stone to quickly escape towards the entrance.
- Pick up some magnifying glasses at the Item Shop! You can identify an enemy’s weakness by using the Freelancer’s ‘Examine’ ability to uncover HP and weaknesses. If you don’t have a freelance writer in your party, use a magnifying glass from your inventory on an enemy during battle. If you would like to see these vulnerabilities displayed again, press the ‘Battle Info’ command during a fight.
Control tips for beginners
- For a detailed overview of the various controls in the game, open the main menu and go to Options> Controls.
- Save often! To save quickly, press – on your left joy-con controller to quickly bring up the save game menu. You can save your game anytime you are in a city or in the field by opening the menu and selecting “Options” then “Save”. There is also an auto save feature which can be turned on or off. By default, it is on.
- Launch your sword at enemies on the open ground to gain the upper hand in battle by engaging with “Y” on your right joy-con! Who knows, you might even get a BP boost. You can also find treasures in the grassy areas on the open ground by swinging your sword — items, pg, weapons — try it.
Combat Tips
- When you are in the field and don’t worry about encountering more enemies, use a guard light. These can be purchased from Item Shops and prevent enemies from spotting your party.
- When facing a strong enemy, build up your BP (and defenses) by starting combat with Default, then launch your attacks when the enemy’s defenses are down. Keep in mind that saving BP (Brave Points) and releasing them all at once will send your BP into negative leaving your defenses open, and you won’t be able to perform any more actions until your BP recovers .
- You’ll never know which enemies you’re bumping into, so it’s always a good idea to have a variety of leveled asterisks to take on any job that comes your way. A well-balanced team is ten times more efficient than any group of single-ride ponies. That being said, your group members have their own unique set of attributes. Mix and match characters with different jobs to find out what each character is good at. You can find quick tips on all available jobs in the Tutorial section of the Travel Diary.
- When traveling in the open field, keep in mind that more and more monsters will spawn at night, and some nastier ones too! If you want to get to your destination with the minimum of hassle, traveling during the day, and looking to gain more combat experience or just looking for a challenge, then night is a good time.
- Occasionally you will come across some rare races of monsters while roaming the grounds. They are much stronger than their fellow creatures, and heading into battle with one of these unprepared villains will bring you to the title screen. So when you spot one save your game and only approach if you are sure you are ready to do so.
- Monsters will sometimes drop “ Monster Treats ” which will attract specific types of monsters to the player on the field. Look in your Items menu and go to the “Monster Treats” section to see what you have on hand. As mentioned above, more monsters will appear on the field at night. If you are looking for an even more challenge, try to attract even more monsters with Monster Treats!
- You can equip Passive abilities on the Capabilities page to make your life easier as you progress through the game. Try equipping the Freelancer’s ‘Diving Rod’ ability to see how many treasure chests are waiting for you to open on the map! The number of available chests will be displayed next to your minimap.
- In large cities, Wagons will allow you to quickly travel from one city you’ve visited to another – for free! It’s always good to check and see if the last location you visited has any new side quests available.
