New study raises new doubts about the safety of genetically modified crops. Research has revealed the Bt toxin, found in many GM crops, in human blood.
The Bt toxin makes crops toxic to pests, but the toxin has been claimed to be harmless to the environment and human health; the argument was that the protein breaks down in the human gut. But the presence of the toxin in human blood shows that this is not happening.
India Today reports:
“Scientists … have detected the insecticidal protein … circulating in the blood of pregnant and non-pregnant women.” They also detected the toxin in the fetal blood, suggesting that it could be passed on to the next generation.
