Essendon has reportedly filed a formal request with the AFL to move its opener against Hawthorn from Marvel Stadium to the MCG to maximize fan participation.
The Bombers confirmed to The Age that a request has been made with the league to allow an additional 25,000 fans to attend their home game against the Hawks.
It comes after the Victorian government gave the crowds the green light for the first round of the season, with the MCG and Marvel Stadium being allowed to operate at 50% capacity.
Hawthorn boss Justin Reeves was also open to the movement, telling The Age, “If that means more Hawthorn fans and members can get into the game, then we’d love to explore it.”
If the Bombers-Hawks match stays at Marvel Stadium, a crowd of around 25,000 would not be allowed to attend. If moved to the MCG, approximately 50,000 clients would be allowed to enter the ground.
Melbourne and Fremantle are currently slated to play MCG earlier the same day, but MCC would be open to hosting the Bombers-Hawks match if a move is approved by the league, according to The Age.
