Apple is using International Women’s Day to expand its range of influential TV + programs. The company has hit a “multi-year” agreement with women’s education rights defender and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai to produce original content for Apple TV + through its new after-school production unit. The team will produce documentaries, dramas, children’s shows and other materials that will help “support women, youth, writers and artists,” according to Yousafzai.
This is not Yousafzai’s first involvement with Apple. The tech giant was the Malala Fund’s first award-winning partner, supporting Yousafzai’s educational initiatives in eight countries. Apples Development academies now works with the fund to promote technology education.
It is a significant extension of the Apple TV + line. While Apple has non-fiction material from creators as Oprah Winfrey and RJ Cutler, its streaming service is still widely known for pure entertainment as Ted lasso. Yousafzai’s shows could add more educational (or at least inspiring) content to this mix. And yes, Apple is clearly hoping to gain some prestige – a team with a very influential activist could attract viewers who would otherwise stick with rivals like Amazon and Netflix.
