Third day, afternoon session, the sun is shining at the Adelaide Oval.
For over a hundred years, it was time for drummers to look at the short square boundaries and fill their boots.
Instead, December 19, 2020 will be a date that falls into cricket infamy as the picturesque pitch has turned into a home of horrors for India’s star hitting lineup.
It’s all gone for 36, their lowest score in any test round.
What a black eye for the craziest cricket nation in the world, ‘eclipsing’ the 42 all against England at Headingley in 1974.
“I can’t believe they had a fight 36,” Shane Warne said in a comment for Fox Cricket.
“I’m still a little in shock.”
You’re not the only one, Shane.
It would have been a little believable if it had happened with the pink ball unrolling menacingly under the lights.
But the crime of cricket was committed in broad daylight, as batsman’s feet stuck in concrete against the world’s best rhythm attack.
Josh Hazlewood (5-8) and Pat Cummins (4-21) were infallible with their line and length as the ball continued to find the edge and then the palms of the receivers.
Amidst all the madness, great friends Hazlewood and Cummins have scored some significant statistical milestones.
200 test wickets for Josh and 150 for Pat.
Hazlewood said he has never had a better day in cricket.
“Everything went as planned,” he said.
“The way Patty started was amazing, knocking out both big wickets (Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli).
“It’s great to go out with this roster and take 20 wickets in every game.”
Australia slashed India to 6-29 in the first hour after picking up at 1-9 overnight.
Cummins kicked things off with the scalp of India’s two batting pawns, underscoring his status as the world’s first test pitcher.
“It’s pretty special, it can’t be much better than this start,” Cummins told Fox Cricket.
“Pretty happy here.
“I thought the first day we played really well, we created a lot of half chances, but all the catches just failed.
“So this is just one of these days, it seems like every take is a carrier and it goes on for a long time.”
Cummins said the carnage was “bizarre” as he felt the terrain had gotten slower by day three.
“But definitely sideways movement so if you hit that area it’s hard work.”
This could be the understatement of the year.
