Best TV Episode of 2020 Winner: “The Jedi” – The Mandalorian
Almost every episode of Season 2 of The Mandalorian contains galaxy-shaking revelations for Star Wars fans, but its fifth episode, “The Jedi,” aired on the widely reported but never officially confirmed rumor that Ahsoka Tano – the former padawan to Anakin Skywalker and a powerful force-weilder in her own right – would complete the transition from animation to live action. Portrayed by Rosario Dawson, Ahsoka was masterful in her early days, freeing the town of Calodan on forest planet Corvus from the Magistrate’s evil clutches. This episode also gave us Grogu – Baby Yoda’s real name – and it also features Grand Admiral Thrawn, a classic Star Wars villain with a rich history. Directed by Dave Filoni, “The” Jedi was a major highlight in a season packed with highlights, and delivered on the promise of what Star Wars Live on the small screen can really be.

“Happy ending” – Schitt’s Creek
Schitt’s Creek ended its six-season streak on a high emotional note, rewarding years of thoughtful character development with a moving farewell that delivers a satisfying conclusion to all of its beloved characters. It’s exactly the kind of upbeat, enjoyable storytelling that the world needs more right now, which is why it’s such a bittersweet – but ultimately satisfying farewell.

“The Hope That Kills You” – Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso’s exemplary first season finale saw coach Ted and the guys from AFC Richmond take on the dreaded Manchester City boys in a bid to miraculously save their football club from extinction. And like the rest of the series, “The Hope That Kills You” was a touching and funny example of warmth, wit, and wisdom.

“On the Run” – What we do in the shadows
A standout episode in a standout TV season, What We Do in the Shadows “On the Run” has it all: Mark Hamill as a vampire named Jim, an oppressed sports story that feels good, and the introduction of the already iconic Laszlo human alter ego Jackie Daytona. WWDITS is successful thanks to its ensemble cast, but Matt Berry’s comedic portrayal of his vampire character’s attempt to act like a human is hands down one of the best performances of the year and elevates “On the Run.” To the episode of the WWDITS 2 season to which we keep coming back.
“Whenever you’re ready” – The Good Place
While almost a bit too idyllic, “Whenever You’re Ready” is a poignant rumination about what makes our lives meaningful, and does Jason, Tahani, Eleanor, Chidi, Michael and Janet justice by allowing them to end. to things by themselves terms. While the sitcom had lofty goals – sketching out a moral theory of the afterlife isn’t a typical TV fare – its ambition brought it to a cathartic end. The show’s greatest strength was that she knew when it was time to move on, and ultimately The Good Place series finale was a fitting sendoff for one of the best TV shows.
