Core arrives today as a free (Early Access) platform on the Epic Games Store. You are probably wondering what Core is. If I boil it down to the basic concept, it’s an online world where you can move from game to game solo or with friends, using your avatar and basic cosmetics when you switch between games. experience after experience. Oh, and you can also play the games there too, with an incredibly robust and easy-to-use set of tools that you can basically drag and drop assets out of the ether to build a shooting arena, a RPG farm area, dodgeball fight, platform, MOBA, or whatever you fancy doing.
The sky is the limit, and you can invite your friends with the click of a button or by sharing a link. Yes, you can make it appear directly from a shared link in, say, Twitch chat, and you can play the same game in seconds. After diving into the experience for a brief foray, I can say that this is definitely a place that you are going to spend a lot of time in if you are a fan of map making and modding that was a staple. from the old days StarCraft and Warcraft III. Whatever you’re looking for, you can find it, and if you can’t, you can build it.
In about an hour on the platform I played shooting games, fantastic PVP games, Ghosts’N’Goblins inspired platforms, mini-MOBAs with lane and number lower players, and more. Most of the games available are small compared to what we consider a “full game” these days, and maybe that’s okay. As part of the huge ‘world’ of Core, you never have to stay if you’re not having fun, as the next game to try is one click away from the selection screen or by walking to a portal. in the selected area.
While choosing a game from a selection of boxes like you would in a digital storefront is fine, the aspect of being ‘in the world’ comes in with Core and you can walk around, throw emotes, and chat everything. looking at a flashy portals’ bulletin board trying to get you to come in and try a new game. Some of the best things out there are showcased in this ever-changing area, so after you come back after a while, new games might call your name when you ride your mount in the public area. This is an interesting way to promote the browsing experience while still allowing “instant transport” via a link or traditional menu search.
There are currently over 20,000 games on Core, of which a few hundred are added daily. Obviously, you will never be able to play them all and certainly some are better than others, and there are plenty of unfinished animal projects littering the unexplored streets of Core’s back alleys. But with so many creations and games going on, you can find all kinds of weird experiences that might surprise you.
There is a wild west style typing game. Yeah, where you walk around town looking for misspelled words. There are farm games, there are deckbuilding games, there is just about anything you could be looking for in style and fashion. And while you may not be able to worry about it and stick with it forever, or even for more than a few minutes, a big part of the journey is exploring from game to game. Since your avatar is unified across all core games, you travel as the hero (and your associated cosmetics) for everything. Aspects like postponing your avatar loadout give Core a meta, unified feel even as you engage in a lot of disparate experiences.
Core is live today on the Epic Games Store, and it’s free (cosmetics are available for purchase, of course, to make your avatar look like various things) so really there isn’t much to it. other than I can tell you that you can’t go and see for yourself with minimal time investment. Go ahead, discover games and play it!
