Referee Donovan Koch recounted one of the most bizarre moments for an official in recent memory after overturning his own decision in the Marsh One-Day Cup on Tuesday.

Redbacks spinner Peter Hatzoglou believed he pocketed his first top-flight wicket when he appealed to be caught behind WA’s Sam Whiteman.

While it was an ambitious Hatzoglou call with Whiteman looking nowhere near the ball, many were surprised when Koch’s finger straightened, sending the drummer back in a bizarre scene.

But as quickly as Koch made his initial call, he just as quickly reversed it after realizing the mistake of his manners, allowing Whiteman to live another day.

“He knows he was wrong and he changed his decision,” said Stuart Clark in a comment for Fox Cricket.

Brett Lee added, “Well, we couldn’t believe it. He fired him and said, ‘I was wrong’.

“He missed that by a mile.”

Despite the confusion, it was a brave job on Koch’s part to right his mistake, and Stuart completely agreed.

“I give him absolute respect for it because usually you give it up and panic about it.”
