Curse of the dead gods released for Xbox One in February, and since that launch, all of us at Passtech Games have had a fantastic time watching you all venture into our dark temple, confronting all kinds of shenanigans. We’ve also been working hard on our latest update, the “Curse of the Dead Cells Update”, which we’re about to tell you about!
The idea of a collaboration with Motion Twin was actually first floated before full launch, during the game’s community-backed development, in October 2020 – which seems eons ago now. Due to time limitations, we have chosen to prioritize the base Curse content for the launch, which ended up being a blessing in disguise as it allowed us to expand the content for today’s update.
There are three new weapons in the update: the Knight’s Broadsword, Conjunctivius Sword, and Condemned Crossbow, the latter of which is a brand new weapon type with a unique crusader combo pattern. With the Broadsword, the second attack and combo finisher will always score a critical hit. Conjunctivius Sword is mighty as hell, but takes damage once from enemies and you are temple dust. The crossbow is a slow-firing ranged weapon that deals damage in an area around impact.
Additionally, we’ve added the iconic Cursed Chest of Dead cells, with some modifications. When you encounter it during your races, you will have to defeat a certain number of enemies without taking damage to unlock its enticing content: a choice of 3 items (weapons or relics), one of which will always be cursed.
Finally, we added a new curse (Curse of the dead gods“ iconic gameplay change events) which, along with a gameplay change, gives CurseThe main character of McCallister, the iconic flaming head of the prisoner of Dead Cells. As for how this new curse works in the game, we’ll let you find out!
Translating Dead cells 2D pixel art in Curse of the dead gods The 3D models were less of a challenge than it looks, as we had a lot of references from Motion Twin and Evil Empire. The biggest challenge here was the prisoner’s head, as it was created for a 2D side-scrolling platformer, and Curse has a top-down camera view. We are happy with the results, as are the studios behind Dead cells!

It should be noted that most of us here in the office are huge fans of Dead cells, so it was super exciting for us. It was also a good choice from a practical standpoint, as both games have a good variety of cool weapons and both studios love good combat systems. In addition to paying homage to a game that marked the decade for us, our goal with the collaboration was to bring fresh and surprising content into Curse, combining the content of Dead cells with the mood of Curse to create new features and weapons. We hope you all enjoy it!
